…To the gym. A Philadelphia native, Cary majors in journalism at Temple University but always squeezes in time for dancing, cheerleading, and working out alongside her writing and editing. She tends to heed the writer’s oft-quoted advice, and has written extensively on the wellness-related topics she knows so much about.
Junior year, Cary worked as the Health and Fitness editor at Temple’s edition of HerCampus magazine, and the year before she penned the health and fitness column for her university’s weekly Temple News. She’s also done stints as an opinions writer, a relationship columnist, and a contributor for JUMP, a Philly music magazine.
Cary’s experience, active lifestyle, and bright personality make her the perfect SELF intern this summer. When she first found out that she would be working at SELF, a magazine that she’s been reading since high school, Cary said she was “blown away.”
So far at SELF, Cary’s enjoyed having Christmas in July. Put in charge of working on the holiday gift guide, she gets to attend events that feature dozens of potential products.
“I get to pick out which gifts I think that SELF readers will like, and make a huge list,” she says. “It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s been awesome having so much control.”
With her experience at SELF just as perfect as she always imagined it would be, Cary can picture herself working at the magazine permanently one day. Her mom’s already a few steps ahead.
“She started buying every copy of SELF,” Cary says, “And she sends me pictures with my name written inside of it.”
